Search button and floating form

Hi all,

I want to include in the header of my template a search button, that after clicking changes in a floating input field. Like the magnifying glass button in the admin bar.

How can I include an image of a magnifying glass in the button? Do I have to include it as a file in my template, or is it readily available to my template?

Where can I find more ‘how to’ information in the WP Documentation or elsewhere? Do I need JavaScript or is CSS sufficient? Perhaps examples that may inspire me?
