restore to previous version after 5.5 update failed

Thanks Steve,

I was stuck in maintenance mode and read somewhere that I should delete a file which caused that message so now this is what I get. I think I just need to go back, and update a bit more mindfully!

@paulmy Do you get any error message?

Ummmm… I think you deleted more than you think. Download a fresh copy of WordPress from WordPress.org. Unzip locally, then using FTP or the file manager app of your hosting control panel, upload the resulting files and directories to your site.

O! I thought the ‘upgrade’ folder under website/wp-contents with wordpress-5.5-uBPORI/wordpress leading to folders for wp-admin, wp-content, wp-includes and some php files might be the route to recovery?

I did only delete one file, but prior to that the update operation failed mid-way and I took the option to finish the incomplete upgrade which of course didn’t work either.

The “upgrades” folder should be empty. If you find that it’s not, it’s a sign that the upgrade did not complete properly. Time to do a manual update: https://wordpress.org/support/article/updating-wordpress/#manual-update

Thanks Steve, I followed you advice and all is now working again! PaulM

PS – of course not a restore to previous version but a working 5.5 install!
