This may be a plugin or theme conflict. Please attempt to disable all plugins, and use one of the default (Twenty*) themes. If the problem goes away, enable them one by one to identify the source of your troubles.
If you can install plugins, install and activate “Health Check”: https://wordpress.org/plugins/health-check/
It will add some additional feature under create a new menu position Tools > Site Health.
On its troubleshooting tab, you can Enable Troubleshooting Mode. This will disable all plugins, switch to a standard WordPress theme (if available), allow you to turn your plugins on and off and switch between themes, without affecting normal visitors to your site. This allows you to test for various compatibility issues.

Hello thanks for the info. I have installed Health Check and enabled troubleshooting mode with all plugins disabled and the default twenty nineteen theme installed, but the issue remains.
Ok, scratch that, I did not have the plugins disabled in the first test. Since then I have found that the Yoast SEO Premium plugin is causing the issue. But I have had this plugin for a while and it was working fine before, so I’m not sure what could be causing the issue now.

I recommend asking at the support of Yoast SEO Premium.
It seems there is a setting in the Yoast SEO options in the Search Appearance section on the Archives tab that was disabled on the Author Archive Settings. I have switched it to enabled and now the author pages are working, however 2 authors are still not loading.
If you go to nuglmagazine.com you’ll find that https://nuglmagazine.com/author/angrygrower/ brings you to the correct author archives, but https://nuglmagazine.com/author/jfarha/ does not.
Some authors’ pages are working while others are not. Now I’m extremely confused.
As I said in my previous reply, ask at the support of Yoast SEO Premium.
As the author is aware, commercial/premium products are not supported in these forums.
